First Baseball Night Game Set
April 17, 2002
Also, the start time for the Saturday, April 27 game against Stanford has been changed to 4 p.m. to allow Beaver fans to see the OSU Spring Football Game at 1 p.m. and then watch the baseball game.
Goss Stadium at Coleman Field has been the Beavers' home since the school began varsity baseball in 1907, making it one of the oldest college diamonds in the country, but it has never had lights until this season. Bert and Shirley Babb, longtime Oregon State supporters, made a gift enabling OSU to install the lighting system, which meets the standards for Triple-A professional baseball.
The lights got their first use last Saturday when the Beavers hosted Hawai'i - Hilo in a non-league doubleheader. After a first game that included nearly 2 hours' worth of rain delays, the second game started shortly before 5 p.m. At 5:34 p.m., with OSU shortstop Will Hudson batting in the bottom of the second inning, the lights flickered on around the diamond and gradually took effect as the skies darkened.
To honor the Babbs' commitment to Oregon State athletics, the OSU Athletic Department presented Bert Babb with the Martin Chaves Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000 and the Athletic Department Director's Award in 1993. The OSU Alumni Association awarded him the 1999 Dan W. Poling Alumni Service Award for his exceptional volunteer leadership.
Babb has had a long and successful career in business, owning Harold's Market in Veneta, the West Lane Thriftway, and the West Lane Shopping Center. Babb was a founding member and first president of the state's grocery association, Oregon Food Industries, and has served on the board of both United Grocers and Thriftway.
Both Bert and Shirley Babb have contributed time and money to many civic
charitable organizations in the Willamette Valley, including American
Legion baseball, Babe Ruth baseball, the State of Oregon Sports Hall of
Fame, Kiwanis, the Children's Miracle Network, and Doernbecher Children's
